Randall A.'s Story

Life After graduation in 1975, I went on a trip through the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania to Greece on an Art scholarship. Spending the summer traveling around the Greek peninsula was a wish come true. Then Pat and I headed to the University of New Mexico for our undergraduate education. I took an extra year to get two majors and a minor, History and Anthropology, and a minor in Philosophy. By 1980, we decided to head to Dallas, TX for work and to start a home. By 1982 I was admitted to the Southern Methodist University's Dedman College in Archaeology where I worked on my PhD. Unfortunately, or fortunately, Pat did extremely well in business, so I decided to stay home to raise our new son, Jonathan. In 1986 I started working at a computer software company part time. In 1990 I was a Systems Programmer on IBM's VM mainframes. Pat had started her own business in which I served as the primary systems administrator. In 1994, sadly, we divorced, but stayed close and are both supportive of our son. I moved to Colorado in 2000 after suffering a terrible accident in 1998. I am now disabled and retired in Colorado's Front Range. I have written a book of poetry, which Pat very kindly published, and I continue to write. Also, I have continued to study traditional classical martial arts, including Taijiquan, Kenjutsu, Aikijujutsu and Jujutsu, although Taiji is my main art now. I love to build and detail models; a junior gardner, I have had some successes this year and find it very enjoyable. I study a wide range of subjects from Astrophysics to archaeology ... I never stop learning. And I am learning to play the keyboard, particularly piano. I live with my delightful Dachshund, Cassie, and a housemate and helper Dennis, doing all the above, as well as working on my 1956 Cadillac sedan. Life is good, if tight, and I have nothing but positive views of the future even though my health is steadily ...Expand for more
declining. It is part of life. Thank you for reading this, and please send me an email! I would love to hear from you! School If I told you who I had a crush on, I would have to kill you. No, seriously, I do not think I could at this point. But I had some good teachers that I liked : Herr Schneider for German, for one. I have a terrible recall problem now so I really cannot remember names. George Duras was a wonderful man. Hermiany Gaskins was fun, and believe it or not helped me to speak to large crowds. No, I did not sound like Charlie Tuna, Ms Gaskins. There were many others. Do it again? No. I did not like school. I hated it ... I was shy, and felt outside of all the groups. I only really liked College, and that I would have continued for the rest of my life! High School, I felt like a nerd. It was uncomfortable. College I went to the University of New Mexico and loved it. I liked Albuquerque and the area. We had no money, life was a bit of a struggle but it was a good life. I miss it. In fact, I would say this is where I was last happiest generally. Go figure. Workplace Work... the original four letter word. Started out flipping burgers, what else was there, and working in the physical anthropology lab. When we left UNM for Dallas, TX, I worked as a restaurant manager at a Pizza Hut out in Garland, Tx, and a security investigator at Sanger Harris. When I went to Graduate School at the Dedman College at SMU, I worked for my faculty advisor illustrating a manual. But later, as fortune would have it, I had to get a real job and started in mainframe computers as a part time text entry position. Over the next 5 years I worked my way up to a full time Systems Programmer, then went on to run my own mainframe shop. Later I went into PC software support and analysis at Microsoft; became an email administrator. Support was always in it so I was always working with users on problems.
